Toll Calculator

Estimate toll plazas and cost for a route.

This tool routes a trip between two places, finds every National Highway fee plaza that sits on that road, and prices each one at the single-journey rate NHAI publishes for the vehicle class you pick - car, LCV, two-axle bus or truck, multi-axle, heavy construction machinery or seven-plus axle. Rates come from the ULIP toll register that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways feeds from the NHAI plaza database.

The output is a start-to-end list of plazas with a price against each and a total, so a driver, dispatcher or accountant can see the toll component of a trip before the vehicle leaves and check it against the FASTag statement afterwards.

Background

What is the Toll Calculator?

The Toll Calculator estimates the user fee a vehicle pays to drive between two places on India's National Highways. User fee is the legal name for toll: section 7 of the National Highways Act, 1956 lets the Central Government levy it, and the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008 - notified on 5 December 2008 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) - set how much, where and with what discounts. It is collected at fee plazas by NHAI or the concessionaire that built the road.

The Rules fixed a base rate per kilometre for 2007-08 - ₹0.65 for a car, jeep or van, ₹1.05 for a light commercial vehicle, ₹2.20 for a two-axle bus or truck, ₹3.45 for multi-axle vehicles and heavy construction machinery, ₹4.20 for seven or more axles - and rule 5 revises it every 1 April by 3 per cent plus 40 per cent of the change in the Wholesale Price Index. Rule 8 keeps plazas on one section and direction at least 60 kilometres apart, except at bridges, bypasses and tunnels. Rule 9 sets the discounts on every plaza board: return within 24 hours at 1.5 times the single fee, a monthly pass of 50 journeys at two-thirds of their price, a flat monthly pass for non-commercial vehicles registered within 20 kilometres (₹150 in 2007-08, indexed since), and half fee for commercial vehicles registered in the district.

Amendments have piled up since. A vehicle in a FASTag lane without a valid tag pays twice the fee; from 15 November 2025 (Third Amendment Rules, 2025) that is 1.25 times if paid by UPI. The 9 September 2024 amendment created GNSS on-board-unit lanes with no fee for the first 20 kilometres a day. From 2 July 2025 sections with bridges, tunnels or flyovers are priced on the lesser of ten times the structure length plus plain road, or five times the section length - up to half off at each plaza's next revision. The FASTag Annual Pass for private cars (₹3,000 for 200 crossings or one year) opened on 15 August 2025 and rose to ₹3,075 from 1 April 2026, the day of the 2026-27 rate revision. The Second Amendment Rules, 2026 (19 March 2026) added e-notices and VAHAN linkage for unpaid fees at barrier-less plazas.

Under the hood

How the estimate is built

No government API returns the toll for an arbitrary trip. What NHAI publishes is a register of fee plazas - code, name, state, coordinates and a rate card per class - exposed through the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) TOLL/01 endpoint, one state at a time. The tool must work out the road first and then find the plazas on it.

Each matched plaza's single-journey rate for the chosen class is summed. Plazas whose register name marks them as closed-loop or entry-exit systems - expressways priced by where you enter and leave - are listed but not counted, because the register cannot know your exit. The total is a one-way figure at the published rate, before any return, monthly, local or annual-pass discount and before the non-FASTag surcharge.

  1. 1

    Geocode both ends

Starting Point and Destination are resolved to coordinates and a state through the Photon geocoder (OpenStreetMap data). The first match wins, so add the state.

  2. 2

    Route the trip

An OSRM routing engine returns the driving route with up to two alternatives. Distance and duration are computed but not shown.

  3. 3

    Detect states crossed

Six points along the polyline are reverse-geocoded so a Chennai to Bengaluru run picks up Andhra Pradesh, not just the end states.

  4. 4

    Pull plaza registers

ULIP TOLL/01 is called once per state, in parallel. The register covers 24 states; union territories such as Puducherry return nothing.

  5. 5

    Match plazas to the road

Plazas within 1.5 km of the route polyline are kept. If an alternative route passes more plazas than the primary, the tool treats it as the real highway rather than a local shortcut.

  6. 6

    Order and price

Matched plazas are sorted by their position along the route, the rate column for the chosen Vehicle Type is read, and flat-rate plazas are summed into Total toll cost.

Using this tool

How to check with Toll Calculator

  1. 1

    Enter Starting Point and Destination

Type a place in Starting Point (From) and Destination (To) and pick a suggestion from the autocomplete. A town plus its state is enough; a street address also works.

  2. 2

    Pick the Vehicle Type

Choose from Car / Jeep / Van, Light Commercial Vehicle, Bus / Truck (2-axle), Multi-Axle Vehicle, Heavy Construction Machinery or 7+ Axle Vehicle, then press Calculate Toll. The choice selects which rate column is read for every plaza.

  3. 3

    Read the plaza list

The headline card shows the resolved route and Total toll cost; the table below lists each plaza in road order with its Price. Use the toolbar to download a PDF or copy a share link that re-runs the same query.

Why it matters

Why estimate toll before a trip

Toll is a real share of trip cost

A two-axle truck pays about three and a half times the car rate at every plaza; over 500 km that is several thousand rupees a quote must cover.

Rates move every April

Rule 5 revises rates on 1 April each year in line with WPI. A freight rate card built on last year's numbers is wrong from the first trip of the new financial year.

Class mistakes cost money

A FASTag issued as the wrong class is overcharged at every plaza. The correct per-plaza price for your class shows at once that deductions are too high.

Choosing a route

A longer state-highway route with no plaza can be cheaper than the National Highway; a plaza-by-plaza list puts a number on the difference.

Field by field

Reading the result

One headline card and one table. Every figure is a published single-journey rate; nothing is adjusted for passes or penalties.

Estimated route
The two places as the geocoder resolved them - name, city, state, country. If this is not the place you meant, refine the input.
Total toll cost
Sum of the Price column for flat-rate plazas, one way. Closed-loop and entry-exit plazas are excluded, so an expressway route totals less than you pay.
Toll Plazas on Route (N)
Plazas found within 1.5 km of the chosen route. A plaza without coordinates in the NHAI register cannot be matched and does not appear.
#
Position along the route from Starting Point to Destination, not a plaza code.
Toll Plaza
The plaza name as registered with NHAI. Names containing close loop or entry exit indicate distance-based pricing.
Price
The single-journey rate for the selected Vehicle Type from the plaza's current rate card - what a FASTag is debited for a one-way crossing with no pass or discount.
Price shown as -
The register has no rate for that class at that plaza - common for heavy construction machinery or seven-plus axle. Confirm at the plaza.
Vehicle Type
Which rate column was read: Car / Jeep / Van, Light Commercial Vehicle, Bus / Truck (2-axle), Multi-Axle Vehicle, Heavy Construction Machinery (HCM / EME) or 7+ Axle Vehicle - the rule 4 classes.
No toll plazas on route
The route was found but no registered plaza sits within 1.5 km of it - genuine for short and state-highway trips, suspicious for a long National Highway run.
Share
Copies a link with from, to and vehicleType in the query string; opening it re-runs the lookup at current rates.

Example input

Sample route

Chennai, Tamil Nadu → Salem, Tamil Nadu

Place names as you would say them, with the state after a comma to avoid a same-named town elsewhere. The arrow is illustrative - the two places go in separate fields.

Use cases

Who uses it

Trip budgeting

Add the toll total to fuel and driver cost before quoting a one-off haul or planning a family road trip.

Comparing vehicle classes

Run the same route as LCV and as a two-axle truck to see how much the class difference adds across all plazas on the corridor.

Freight rate cards

Transporters build per-lane toll allowances into contract rates and refresh them after the 1 April revision each year.

Reconciling FASTag statements

Match the plaza list against the FASTag passages for the same trip to spot a wrong-class deduction or a plaza the vehicle should not have crossed.

Troubleshooting

Common problems

Could not find the place I typed

The geocoder returns one best match, so a bare village name may resolve to another state or to nothing. Add the district or state after a comma, or pick a suggestion from the autocomplete.

A plaza I always pay at is missing

Either the routing engine chose a different road than you drive, or the plaza is not in the NHAI register with coordinates (state-highway and municipal plazas usually are not). Check it on NHAI's Toll Information System at tis.nhai.gov.in; to force a road, split the trip into two lookups through a town on it.

The total is lower than my FASTag statement

Closed-loop and entry-exit plazas are listed but not summed, the tool prices one way only, and a vehicle without a valid FASTag pays double in cash or 1.25 times by UPI. Add the expressway segment from its own rate card and compare plaza by plaza.

The price differs from the plaza board

Rates change on 1 April and at concession handovers, and the register can lag by a few days. The board is authoritative; if a FASTag debit exceeds it, raise a dispute with the issuer bank or on the NHAI helpline 1033 within 30 days, quoting plaza and time.

Lookup failed

The geocoder, the routing engine or ULIP did not answer in time. Your input is not at fault; wait a minute and press Calculate Toll again. Multi-state routes are slowest because each state is a separate register call.
