Company Lookup

Look up company details by CIN or a director by DIN.

This tool reads the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) register through ULIP. Enter a 21-character Corporate Identification Number (CIN) and it returns the company's name, current status, Registrar of Companies, incorporation date, registered office address, the turnover and profit or loss it has filed by financial year, and the directors on its board with each one's DIN status. Switch to DIN and it returns a single director's record by their 8-digit Director Identification Number.

The company profile and the director list come from two separate MCA feeds, so a CIN result can show the company card even when the registry has no director rows for it, and the other way round. Everything shown is what the MCA register holds at the moment you look it up.

Background

What is Company Lookup (MCA)?

Company Lookup reads the register kept by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the Union ministry that administers the Companies Act, 2013 through its Registrars of Companies (ROCs). Every company incorporated in India is entered in that register under a 21-character Corporate Identification Number (CIN), and every person who serves as a director holds an 8-digit Director Identification Number (DIN). The register is the primary record of a company's legal existence: its status, registered office, directors and filings.

The register went electronic under MCA21, one of the Mission Mode Projects of the National e-Governance Plan: piloted at Coimbatore on 18 February 2006, launched from Delhi on 18 March 2006 and live at every ROC by 4 September 2006. The DIN dates from the Companies (Amendment) Act, 2006, which inserted sections 266A to 266G into the Companies Act, 1956; the requirement now sits in sections 153 to 159 of the 2013 Act. The current portal, MCA21 Version 3, went live in phases from 24 May 2021 (LLP module 8 March 2022, first nine company forms 1 September 2022, the rest in January 2023).

Two recent changes affect how a record reads today. Voluntary strike-off has been handled centrally by the Centre for Processing Accelerated Corporate Exit (C-PACE) since 1 May 2023 under notification S.O. 1269(E) of 17 March 2023; processing fell from over two years to under two months, and 38,658 companies were struck off by 31 July 2025. And director KYC moved from annual to once in three years: under the Companies (Appointment and Qualification of Directors) Amendment Rules, 2025 (G.S.R. 943(E) of 31 December 2025, in force from 31 March 2026) a DIN holder files Form DIR-3 KYC Web by 30 June after every third financial year, and a missed filing deactivates the DIN until it is filed with a ₹5,000 fee.

Under the hood

How the MCA register is built and served

A company comes into being when the ROC approves the SPICe+ incorporation form and issues the certificate with the CIN. The CIN encodes six facts in order: listing status (L listed, U unlisted), the five-digit NIC code of the main activity, the two-letter ROC state, the four-digit year of incorporation, a three-letter class (PTC private, PLC public, OPC one person, NPL section 8, GOI and SGC government, FTC foreign subsidiary, ULL and ULT unlimited) and the six-digit registration number. A CIN changes when a company lists or moves its registered office to another state, so an old CIN can return no record. LLPs carry a seven-character LLPIN (three letters, hyphen, four digits) and are not covered here.

Each year the company files its financial statements in Form AOC-4 within 30 days of the AGM (section 137) and its annual return in MGT-7, or MGT-7A for small companies and OPCs, within 60 days (section 92); late filing costs ₹100 per day per form. Charges over assets are registered in CHG-1 within 30 days (section 77). Directors join and leave through DIR-12. ULIP, the DPIIT logistics data platform, exposes this master data to authorised consumers; this tool calls its company profile, company directors and single-director endpoints.

  1. 1

    Incorporation

The ROC approves SPICe+ and issues the certificate. Name, class, state and registration number are fixed in the CIN at this point.

  2. 2

    Director allotment

Each director receives a DIN through the incorporation form or a standalone DIR-3. It stays with the person for life across every company they serve.

  3. 3

    Annual filings

AOC-4 carries the balance sheet and profit and loss; MGT-7 carries shareholding and the board. These populate the Financial History rows and refresh the director list.

  4. 4

    Status events

The ROC changes status on a section 455 dormancy application, an STK-2 voluntary exit through C-PACE, a section 248 strike-off for non-filing or two years without business, or a tribunal order.

  5. 5

    Director KYC

Since 31 March 2026 DIR-3 KYC Web is filed once every three financial years by 30 June. A missed filing flips the DIN from Approved to Deactivated until the ₹5,000 filing is made.

  6. 6

    Lookup

ULIP authenticates this tool, forwards the CIN or DIN to MCA and returns the master record. Nothing is cached; the result is the register as of the query.

Using this tool

How to check with Company Lookup

  1. 1

    Pick CIN or DIN

Use the Search by switch beside the field. CIN takes the 21-character number from the certificate of incorporation, typed in capitals; DIN takes the 8-digit number and accepts digits only.

  2. 2

    Check

The field checks the format before sending. A CIN lookup queries the company profile and the director list together on one ULIP session; a DIN lookup queries the single director record.

  3. 3

    Read the cards

A CIN result opens with the company name, status badge and a copyable CIN chip, then Incorporation Date, Registrar of Companies and contact rows, the Registered Office Address card, a Financial History table and a Directors & Designated Partners table. A DIN result is one card with the name, DIN Status badge and Date of Birth. Share copies the URL; PDF builds a report.

Why it matters

Why check a company or director

Confirm the counterparty exists

A GSTIN or letterhead proves little on its own. An Active company at the stated registered office, with the same directors who are signing for it, is the baseline for any contract, consignment or credit line.

Read filing discipline

Gaps in the Financial History table mean AOC-4 was not filed for that year. Three consecutive years of non-filing disqualifies every director for five years under section 164(2) and makes the company a strike-off candidate.

Catch a struck-off shell

A company under process of striking off, or already struck off, cannot lawfully trade. Fake invoicing and phantom transporters often run on such CINs because the name still looks genuine.

Verify the individual

A DIN lookup ties a name and date of birth to an approved identifier. A Deactivated or Disqualified DIN Status means the person cannot sign MCA filings or join a board until it is restored.

Field by field

Reading the result

A CIN result is three cards and two tables; a DIN result is a single card. Rows the registry does not populate are hidden rather than shown blank.

Company name + status
The registered name with a badge for the MCA status. Active is highlighted; every other value (Strike Off, Under Process of Striking Off, Dormant under section 455, Amalgamated, Dissolved, Converted to LLP) is shown neutral and should be read as a warning.
CIN
The 21-character number as held by MCA, with a copy button. Decode it as listing status, NIC code, ROC state, year, class and registration number.
Incorporation Date
The date on the certificate of incorporation. The year should match digits 9 to 12 of the CIN; a mismatch means the CIN was reissued after a change of state.
Registrar of Companies
The ROC office the company answers to - RoC Bangalore, RoC Mumbai, RoC Delhi and so on.
Company Category
The category the register records for the entity, as supplied by MCA. Hidden when the feed does not return it.
Registered Email / Contact Number
The email and phone MCA holds for statutory notices, as last updated through INC-22 or the annual return. ROC notices go to this email.
Registered Office Address
The full registered office - lines, area, city, district, then state, PIN and country. This is the address section 12 requires on letterheads and invoices.
Financial History
One row per financial year filed: Financial Year, Range, Turnover (₹), Profit / Loss (₹) with losses in red, and Audit Status. Figures are as filed in AOC-4; a missing year means no filing reached the register.
Directors & Designated Partners
The current board from the MCA director feed, with the count in the heading. Columns are Name, DIN, DIN Status and Date of Birth. Former directors are not listed.
DIN Status
Approved is the normal state and is highlighted. Deactivated means DIR-3 KYC is overdue; Disqualified means section 164 applies. Anything but Approved blocks the person from signing filings.
Date of Birth
Shown for each director and on the DIN card. Use it to tell apart namesakes across companies.
No director records
The empty state shown when the company feed returns a profile but the director feed returns no rows. It means no rows were returned, not that the company has no directors.

U (unlisted) + 74999 (NIC industry code) + KA (Karnataka ROC) + 2015 (year of incorporation) + PTC (private limited) + 123456 (registration number). Twenty-one characters, no spaces or hyphens.

Use cases

Who uses it

Vendor and transporter onboarding

Confirm a new supplier or logistics partner is an Active company, note which ROC it answers to, and see whether its filed turnover matches the volume it claims.

Signing-authority checks

Before accepting a contract, LR or bank mandate signed by a director, confirm the person sits on that company's board and that their DIN Status reads Approved.

Registered-address verification

Match the address on a letterhead, invoice or GST registration against the registered office the MCA holds on file.

Credit and insurance underwriting

Lenders and insurers read the Financial History table and Audit Status for a quick view of filed results before pulling the full AOC-4 from the MCA portal.

Troubleshooting

Common problems

CIN rejected before submitting

The field expects L or U, five digits, two capital letters, four digits, three capital letters and six digits, with no spaces. Copy it from the certificate of incorporation or the company's own filings; directory listings often drop a character.

Valid-looking CIN returns no company

The company may have listed, moved its registered office to another state or converted to an LLP, each of which changes the identifier. Search the name on the MCA portal under MCA Services, View Company or LLP Master Data, and use the CIN shown there. LLPINs are not accepted here.

Status shows Strike Off or Under Process of Striking Off

Do not transact. A struck-off company can apply to the NCLT for restoration within 20 years under section 252; a company served an STK-1 notice has 30 days to reply to the ROC.

Director shows Deactivated DIN

DIR-3 KYC was not filed on time. The director files Form DIR-3 KYC Web on the MCA V3 portal with the ₹5,000 fee and the DIN is reactivated once processed.

Details are wrong or out of date

The register only changes when the company files: INC-22 for address, DIR-12 for directors, each within 30 days, and the annual return for email or phone. For a portal error rather than a stale filing, raise a service ticket under MCA Services, Complaints, or call the MCA helpdesk on 0120-4832500.
